Tucked away in Western North Carolina is a land so diverse and intriguing, that it can only be described as heavenly. From January to late February this enchanted paradise becomes a winter wonder land, filled with exciting adventures from snow skiing and mountain hiking to exploring vast estates and sipping hot chocolate by a warm fire.
Asheville, known for it's romantic getaways, is home to the Biltmore estate. Be inspired by the relaxed elegance of George and Edith Vanderbilt's 250-room family home and country retreat. Discover original art from masters such as Renoir, magnificent 16th century tapestries, Napoleon's chess set, a library with 10,000 volumes, a Banquet Hall with a 70-foot ceiling, 65 fireplaces, an indoor pool, bowling alley, and priceless antiques.
About 30 minutes West of Asheville is the quaint town of Waynesville. It's historic old buildings, brick sidewalks, galleries, tempting foods and old-time general store will take you back to a more leisurely time. A time when people made you feel welcome and when you could slow down and really savor the present. Spread among the rolling hills are many rustic rental cabins that make for great extended weekend retreats.
If you love the small town flavor with true Southern hospitality, then keep moving West to Maggie Valley. The slow winding road leading into town runs next to a shimmering stream. Stop into Smackers restaurant for a true home cooked meal or head up the mountain to Cataloochee Ski Resort. The fresh blown powder with ski lifts makes for a truly memorable day. On the way back take the kids for a quick session at Tube World and watch them burn off those last few calories for the day, before retreating back to your fire-warmed cabin.
No matter how you look at it, the Great Smoky Mountains in Western North Carolina offer a little bit of excitement for everyone. Plan on slowing down, relaxing, and spending some time in some absolutely beautiful country!
