FLORIDA MOM MAGAZINE - September '08 - Moms on the Run - JDR's Two Bridges RunBy: Michele Gillis
Over 750 runners participated in the 2008 JDR Bridges 5K Run last month in downtown Jacksonville. The race which started at Hemming Plaza was full of moms excited to compete in the race alone, with their children at their side or even while pushing their little ones in a stroller.
Following the race, runners were met with cold refreshments, food and music at a block party in Hemming Plaza.
The JDR Family Foundation raised over $40,000 for area nonprofit organizations. Some of the money they raised this year will go to American Diabetes Association, Shands, Children’s Miracle Network and Families First.
The event was produced by 1st Place Sports. For information on upcoming races visit www.1stplacesports.com.
LINDA MORGAN with her two children CODY and KYLIE “I run the races for exercise and because it's fun. I like meeting and greeting others during the race. I run the local races and my best time with babies and stroller is 32 minutes. Without babies, 22 minutes.”
ERIN, BOBBY, GARRETT and STEPHANIE CORBETT Stephanie Corbett was recently diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, but that has only brought out the fight in her.
“I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. It doesn’t have me, but I have it. That’s why I run, to keep in shape. I run five times a week and take two days off. There are few things in life that you can feel a sense of accomplishment in and this is one thing where you can accomplish something. You can beat your time from last time or do better than ever before. This is my second race. My best time is 34:06.”
SARA CISSEL and PETER KOMAROSKI Cissel of Jacksonville Beach is a mom of two boys, James, 10 and John, 7 and wanted to run this particular race because she said it sounded like fun. “I enjoy the night races over the bridges and I try to run most of the local races. My best time is 28 minutes.”
EMILY, DANA, and HALEY STALLINGS Dana Stallings ran the race with her two daughters, Emily and Haley. “We have a running club at Mandarin Christian School called Jax Rabbits. We meet three times a week and have about 15 to 20 runners each morning. We formed it to help keep the kids in shape and to stay active over the summer. Next week we are doing the Tour de Pain. We try to stay in shape for cross country and track. My best time is 24:01.”
TAYLOR, CHARLENE, TRENTON, CARLEY, and CAITLIN LIBERTY This is Charlene Liberty’s second run since returning from a tour with the Air National Guard in Iraq. She is a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office police officer and enjoys running with her children. “It’s good exercise, a good way to relieve stress and for my job I like to stay in shape. Her best time is 29:29 for a 5K race. I think running is a good sport for everyone, so I’m trying to get them involved in something I think is good for them.”
DALE AND ALEX DICKSON with MARY WEBER “I started running as a hobby over the last two years. I never ran before. I did it to get in shape and feel better and it worked. I lost about 25 lbs just walking and running. I run in the local runs and my best time is 32 minutes.”
