How did you get into teaching spinning?
“When my husband, Adam, was in the Air Force, we lived in Oklahoma.
I was taking spinning classes and they were looking for new instructors. I did well in the classes, so I started getting certified. I started spinning when I was 19 and I’ve loved spinning ever since. It’s always been my favorite workout. I love the motivating music and I think it is by far the best workout. You sweat the most and you burn the most calories. By the end of the class you are just drenched and I love that feeling.”
What is the draw of spinning?
“It’s not like just riding a bike. There is a resistance lever so you can make it a really easy ride to going up a really steep hill. You do jumps, hills, sprints and endurance. You can do so many things on a bike. People don’t realize when you do a spin class, you are about to get your butt kicked.”
How does your husband’s occupation affect your life?
“Adam is a pilot for Continental Airline and flies F-15’s with the Florida Air National Guard, so he is gone a lot. It’s different every month, but sometimes he’s gone for 20 days out of the month. But, he’s a pilot and that’s what I signed up for. He’s such an amazing guy and I’m so proud of him and what he does.”
How do you manage that with two children?
“I only teach four classes a week and we have a routine on the days that he is gone from the minute we wake up until we go to bed. So, there’s never that blank space of ‘What are we going to do or how do I keep them occupied?’ It’s all about routine and keeping them busy.”
How do you balance instructing and motherhood?
“I teach while they are in school or if I have a class in the afternoon, they come with me and go to the daycare at the gym. They’ve gone with me since they were little, so they know a lot of afternoons that we are going to the gym. It’s just part of our routine.”
What are some of your future goals?
“I’d like to pick up more classes and teach other places. I just like teaching and there are only so many classes at each gym and you can’t teach them all because they like to have different instructors. Right now, I just want to be the best mom and wife I can be.”
Who inspires you?
“My husband because he is so driven, passionate and motivated. We’ve been married for 10 years and I’m still kind of in awe of him.”
You look great, what's your secret?
“I also do Pilates and use the elliptical for something different.”
