FLORIDA MOM MAGAZINE - May '08 - Distinctive BathroomsBy: Robert Candler
There are many times in the evening, after a hard days work dealing with career, business, family, and the little ones, that you need to decompress. In fact, you demand those precious few minutes to yourself to just relax and unwind. What better way to let the weight of the world slide off of your shoulders, then to immerse yourself into a sensually warm, lavender-scented bath? Add a few more bath salts, light a candle, and enjoy a glass of wine, to top off the experience.
Over the last few years, the bathroom has evolved into a last bastion, protecting our inner sanctity, by incorporating different themes and compositions. Today, many builders are using select woods and natural materials. Wood, with its unique qualities of warmth and color, adds richness and quality to any bathroom. Natural materials, such as marble, granite, and slate, help to bring a sophisticated earthiness to the setting. Bathrooms are typically filled with hard, shiny fixtures and surfaces. By introducing texture and contrasting materials, you can add visual interest and warmth to your retreat.
Simple, yet elegant. A free-standing claw tub with antique brass fixtures makes a stunning center piece. Just add hot water, some fragranced bath oil, bring a book, and your set for relaxation. Lose yourself in a classic, and the stresses of the day will melt away.
The modern drop-in garden tub, with brushed nickel fixtures, surrounded by porcelain tile, instantly sets up spa inspired moods. Put on some of your favorite music, drape a hot washcloth over your eyes, and the tensions will wash down the drain. Add in a set of matching towels, along with baskets and other essentials to complete the atmosphere.
If the day has not gotten too long, open up the blinds or curtains, and let the natural sunlight flood the room. The sun's rays provide great color, especially against inlaid cabinetry, adorned with updated hardware. The oil-rubbed fixtures atop this corner drop-in, give this bathroom a regal, yet inviting feel. A little greenery goes a long way to tie in all of the different natural materials and finishes. |
